The 2nd Cross-Strait Workshop on Typhoon Impacts and Crisis Management”successfully held in Guangdong

More than 120 experts and scholars from Taiwan, mainland China and Hong Kong have participated the workshop. The workshop was divided into two parts, first part was in Guangzhou, and the second part was in Guangdong Yangjiang City (frequent typhoon landing point)of Guangdong.

Professor Danling Tang (South China Sea Institute of Oceanology, Chinese Academy ofSciences) and Professor Guangjun Sui (Guangdong University of Foreign Studies) served as the Presidents of the workshop, and chairman of the Organizing Committee.

The workshop included 6 sessions:“ Environmental Change and the typhoon track forecast","Typhoon and air-sea interaction," "Ecological and environmental effects of typhoon", "Typhoon environment and fisheries disaster," "Typhoon disaster assessment," " Disaster crisis management and system construction " and a symposium of "Earthquake, Tsunami and Other disasters "; the workshop had 43 oral presentations and 23 posters, including 16 invited presentations. 8 keynote speeches were delivered by Li Chongyin, Chen Zhongliang, Zhao Feng, Sui Guangjun, Wang Dongxiao, and Tang Danling.

During the workshop, scientists discussed typhoon forecasting, ecological environment problems caused by the typhoon, disaster assessment and crisis management. Besides,participants also visited Ocean Observing Station of Yangjiang and Weather Station in Hailing

Island, Yangjiang Meteorology Bureau, and inspected the typhoon disaster sites.

Natural hazards have caused public concern worldwide. Typhoon is one of the most frequent and influential natural hazards in the world. Both Taiwan and mainland China are severely affected by typhoons. “The 2nd Cross-Strait Workshop on Typhoon Impacts and Crisis Management (Typhoon 2011)," strengthened the understanding of the typhoon impacts, disaster and management, probed the scientific issues and crisis management and also promoted disaster prevention and disaster evaluation. The workshop explored the cross-strait cooperative research program, laid the foundation for the future scientific research on typhoons and other disasters, and disaster management. It is a strong impetus to the exchange and cooperation on the scientific research of typhoon between Cross-Strait and in the whole world. This workshop is also a promotion of exchanges and friendship between cross-strait researchers.The workshop organizing committee specifically presented Yangjiang specialty kite to all participants. “The 3rd Cross-Strait Workshop on Typhoon

Impacts and Crisis Management” will be held in Taiwan.

The workshop was organized by the South China Sea Institute of Oceanology (SCSIO),Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and Guangdong University of Foreign Studies, China. Co-organizers were Guangdong Provincial Department of Science and Technology, Taiwan Ocean University, Taiwan University, Nanjing University of Information Science and Technology, Guangdong Ocean University, Yangjiang Government, and Yangjiang Meteorology Bureau; Sponsors includes Chinese Academy of Sciences and National Natural Science Foundation of China.
