Advocated by Professors Yuan Yeli and Shi Ping in 2001, a series of international conferences on the South China Sea Marine Environment began and continued every other year, hosted by the Key Laboratory of Tropical Marine Environmental Dynamics, South China Sea Institute of Oceanology, Chinese Academy of Sciences. To date, the conference has been successfully held four times and is well known in the research community. The conference has provided a research platform for the scientists who are engaged in studying the South China Sea and tropical marine environment. At the end of November in 2009, the 5th International Workshop on the Marine Environmental Change of the South China Sea will be held in Guangzhou, China. The meeting themes are the relationship between the Asian Monsoon and the South China Sea Environmental Change, and their relationship with the tropical Pacific Ocean and Indian Ocean.

　　 The physical climate condition of the marginal seas has received much attention due to issues related to global climate change and regional sustainable development. The South China Sea is the largest marginal sea in the northwestern Pacific Ocean. Regarding its significance, the South China Sea is important not only for the fishery and oil industry in China and its other surrounding nations but also for the role of its tropical water in Southeast Asian climate and weather. Geographically, the South China Sea is connected with the Pacific Ocean through the Luzon Strait to its east, and it reaches the Indian Ocean through the Malacca Strait. As a channel of the Pacific Ocean and the Indian Ocean, the South China Sea is the region where the Indian monsoon and the East Asian monsoon meet, so it is highly relevant to the global climate change. As a result, the climate condition of the South China Sea has attracted much attention from oceanographers and climatologists all over the world. For this conference, experts in the field are invited to discuss some key issues related to the two meeting themes. 　　 The extended abstract should be written in English, using 12-point font (Times New Roman recommended) and no more than four pages (including any graphs and tables). The content should include a title, names of the authors and their institutions, mailing addresses, and E-mail, phone and fax numbers of the corresponding author. We suggest you use Microsoft Word or plain text format for the electronic document. The abstract should be sent to the secretary of the conference via regular mail or E-mail (preferred) before October 15th, 2009.
