Remote sensing of Marine Ecology & Environment, LED，SCSIO
Invited by Dr. DongXiao Wang and Dr. DanLing Tang of LED, SCSIO, Dr. Antony Liu, a NASA retired senior scientist, visited SCSIO during 9th – 17th, May, 2010.
Dr. Antony Liu gave seven academic lectures on ocean remote sensing. Many research scientists and graduate students of the institute and some other institutions attended the lectures. During the five-day courses, Dr. Antony Liu introduced in detail the distribution of internal waves in Nansha Island, and how to apply satellite remote sensing to seabed terrain measurement, oil pollution detection, coastwatch and study of sea ice movement and growth. He highlighted major accomplishments of NASA, as well as the significant influence of SAR ocean remote sensing on navigation, seabed terrain measurement, oil spill and fishery. Dr. Antony Liu’s vivid yet serious delivery and patient explanation to every question impressed and enlightened the audience. Dr. Antony Liu’s lecture series on ocean remote sensing benefited us by their abundant content, broadened our horizon, increased our knowledge, and showed the trend of the development of ocean remote sensing, all of which were helpful for improving the microwave ocean remote sensing research of SCSIO.
As a thesis committee member, Dr. Antony Liu attended the thesis defense for Ph.D and Master. Those are Dr. DanLing TANG’s students in the flied of “Remote sensing & Marine Ecology/Environment” of RSMEE, SCSIO. During 16-17 May, Dr. Liu visited Daya Bay Biological Research Station of SCSIO, accompanied by Dr. YouShao Wang and Dr. DanLing Tang.
Dr. Antony Liu graduated from Department of Mathematics of Taiwan University, and attained his doctoral degree in mechanics in Johns Hopkins University in USA. He has been a senior research scientist of NASA since 1992. He has been in charge of many major research programs of ESA, JAXA, CSA and NASA. Dr. Antony Liu’s main research interests include air-sea-ice interaction, satellite image processing, coastwatch and non-linear internal wave study. Dr. Antony Liu retired last year and is now a visiting professor of Taiwan Ocean University.
