Professor Bo Qiu from Department of Oceanography, University of Hawaii, visits SCSIO

With the invitation of State Key Laboratory of Tropical Oceanography (LTO), Prof. Bo Qiu visited the SCSIO on July.13, 2013, and gave a presentation entitled " Decadal Variability, Impact, and Prediction of the Kuroshio Extension System ". Prof. Yan Du chaired the seminar. Prof. Dongxiao Wang, deputy director of SCSIO, Prof. Ping Shi, director of LTO and more than 40 faculties and students attended the seminar.

In his talk, Prof. Qiu pointed out that the Kuroshio Extension (KE) system oscillates between the stable and unstable dynamic states with a period of about 10 years. Transitions between the dynamics states were initiated by wind-induced SSH anomalies associated with the Pacific Decadal Oscillations (PDO) in the central North Pacific. Decadal KE path variability modulates the regional sea surface temperature field and then feedback to the atmospheric circulation. Based on this coupled dynamic framework, Prof. Qiu established a prediction model for the decadal variability of KE dynamic system. The wonderful talk aroused great interests from the audiences. The discussions on the topic are warmly and in-depth. Finally, Director Ping Shi wished that the young researchers in LTO could learn the advanced ideas and methods from Prof. Qiu, interact more actively with oceanographic experts and do the research works better and better.
