Professors Michael Goodfellow and Kui Hong visited SCSIO and Gave Insightful Talks on Actinobacterial Studies
TEXT SIZE: A A A

On December 3, 2010, professor Michael Goodfellow, an internationally well known actinobacterial systematist from the Newcastle University, United Kingdom, and professor Kui Hong, a famous actinobacterial scholar from the Institute of Tropical Bioscience and Biotechnology, Chinese Academy of Tropical Agricultural Sciences, visited SCSIO and gave impressive presentations on actinobacterial studies, under the invitation of professor Changsheng Zhang from CAS key Laboratory of Marine Bio-resources Sustainable Utilization (LMB). Professors Xiang Li, Jianhua Ju, Yonghong Liu and Shuhua Qi from LMB participated in the talks and discussions.

Professor Michael Goodfellow, currently the Chair of the Bergey's Manual Trust, specializes in microbial systematics and biotechnology and is internationally recognized for promoting actinomycete biology. During the visiting, professors Michael Goodfellow and Kui Hong gave insightful talks entitled respectively “Actinobacteria from Extreme Environments: New Opportunities for Drug Discovery” and “Target Driven Discovery of Mangrove Actinomycetes”, presenting their recent research progresses and perspectives. Their talks focused on the resources and systematics of actinomycetes, and actinobacteria-driven novel drug discoveries, especially on exploring microbes from extreme environments and exploiting bioactive targets from mangrove actinomycetes. They pointed out that the research on marine microorganisms is a worldwide hotspot and has a bright future. They also created in-depth discussions on the topic of drug discovery from marine microbes with the audience. In the end, professor Goodfellow encouraged more young researchers to strive persistently in the fantastic world of marine microorganisms, and wished them more achievements.

More than 50 researchers from LMB, Sun Yat-Sen University, South China Agricultural University, Guangzhou Institute of Microbiology and Yunnan University attended the meeting.
