ZHANG ChangshengDeputy Director

ZHANG Changsheng, born in Hubei Province 1972, is the deputy director of South China Sea Institute of Oceanology(SCSIO), Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS).

Dr. ZHANG graduated from Shanghai Jiao Tong University with a Bachelor Degree in 1994, and University of Wuppertal, Germany, with a Doctorate Degree in 2002. He then worked as a Post-doctoral fellow at University of Wisconsin-Madison, USA, from 2003 to 2008. He was appointed as a professor in South China Sea Institute of Oceanology, CAS (SCSIO) in 2008. In 2012, he was in charge of Research and Planning Department, SCSIO. In 2015, Dr. ZHANG was appointed of Director Assistant of SCSIO. He is now a deputy director of South China Sea Institute of Oceanology. Since November 2020, he has been the director of the China-Sri Lanka Joint Center for Education & Research.

As a research professor of South China Sea Institute of Oceanology, he has been focusing his research on marine natural products. His investigations involve following correlated areas: (1) Isolation and structural characterization of microbial natural products from special marine ecosystems; (2) Elucidation of novel biosynthetic pathways and unique enzymatic reaction mechanisms embedded in the biosynthesis of complex microbial natural products; (3) Generation of "unnatural” natural products by combinatorial biosynthesis and synthetic biology.

Dr. ZHANG has published more than 80 publications in SCI journals including ScienceNat Chem BiolNat CommunMol CellJ Am Chem SocAngew ChemChem Sci and is the author and co-author of five books. Dr. ZHANG sits on editorial board for several international periodicals including the top-tier journal Natural Product Reports.
