Welcome to the Web site of the South China Sea Institute of Oceanology (SCSIO), Chinese Academy of Sciences.

The processes of resource-shortage, environment deterioration and population explosion become faster and faster, marine science has encountered unprecedented challenges, resulting in a number of new issues on marine science and technology. It was pointed out “to enhance the high-tech industries and to develop marine industry" in the Party's 17th general meetings. In 2008, General Secretary Hu Jintao pointed out in the National Science and Technology conference in his speech, "to accelerate the development of marine science and technology and to peacefully exploit ocean resources". As a discipline to study earth science, marine science now faces with tremendous development opportunities and bear a significant historical responsibility in building an innovative country and a harmonious social society.

The South China Sea Institute of Oceanology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, is one of the largest national comprehensive marine scientific research institutions in China. In the last fifty years, especially since affiliation to the Knowledge Innovation project, the SCSIO has provided a lot of new knowledge, new theories and new methods in enhancing the national research level of marine science and technology and promoting the national development of blue economy.

Here, you can learn about our key research areas, programs and their developments; you can meet faculties, M.S. and Ph.D. candidates, post-doctorial fellows and visiting scholars; you can explore the progresses of oceanographic research in China, and discover the long-term international cooperation between our institute and some world well-known institutions.

As a national scientific institution, we are carrying out researches in the fields of ocean sciences, including: tropical marine environmental dynamics and their ecological affects; marginal sea geology and paleoenvironment; sustainable utilization of marine biological resources. Comprehensive and systematic studies of the marine and ocean sciences are also encouraged with a mission to meet the national strategic demands by aiming at scientific frontiers in the world.

I wish you an enlightening, enjoyable, and informative experience with this web site.

  Sincerely,

  LI Chaolun

  Director-general of SCSIO
