PORSEC President Dr. Katsaros Kristina et al visit SCSIO

In order to prepare well for the PORSEC2008 (Pan Ocean Remote Sensing Conference 2008), Dr. Katsaros Kristina, Current president of the PORSEC Association, and Dr. Tim Liu, Current treasurer of the PORSEC Association, invited by Dr. Danling Tang, Enlisted Scientist for ‘Hundred Talents Programme’ of Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), Professor of South China Sea Institute of Oceanography (SCSIO), CAS, and member of the PORSEC Association's standing committees (SOC), came to visit SCSIO and the relevant departments in Beijing in Nov. 2007. Si Zhang, Director of SCSIO, Dongxiao Wang, Deputy Director of SCSIO and Dr. Danling Tang, organizer of PORSEC2008 went into deep discussion with Dr. Katsaros Kristina et al on the relevant issues about PORSEC2008.

Both Dr. Tim Liu and Dr. Katsaros Kristina are well-known scientists in the arena of remote sensing. During their visit to SCSIO, they gave scientific reports under the titles of ‘Ocean-atmosphere coupling observed from space’ and ‘Air-sea fluxes from satellite data’ respectively and had a heated discussion on the relevant issues with their counterparts and the postgraduate students in SCSIO. Later, in company with Professor Danling Tang, Dr. Katsaros and Dr. Tim Liu went northward to Beijing to visit the National Remote Sensing Center of China, Institute of Remote Sensing Applications, CAS and Institute of Atmospheric Physics, CAS, aiming to promote the PORSEC2008. SCSIO thought much of this visit from PORSEC Association, Dr. Dongxiao Wang, Deputy Director of SCSIO arranged for the agenda of this visit in person. Meanwhile, Wen Yan, Assistant of the Director of SCSIO was delegated specially to join the visit to Beijing. Great support and help was also given by the Department of Science and Research and Department of Development and Planning of SCSIO.

PORSEC2008 will be held in Guangzhou at the beginning of December in the year 2008. This will definitely be one of the most important international events of SCSIO, CAS, as well as one of the most important initiating projects of the 5oth anniversary of SCSIO. Professor Danling Tang of SCSIO is in charge of the PORSEC2008. So far the preparation work of PORSEC2008 is proceeding smoothly. The topics and conveners of the 18 sub-sessions and the two special workshops have almost been fixed, including one special workshop about the research on South China Sea. What’s more, a poster session will be set especially for young scholars and students in PORSEC2008, and awards will be given to the first, second and third grade posters respectively.

Moreover, through the great effort of the PORSEC2008 organizing committee, International Journal of Remote Sensing (SCI) has agreed to publish seccected PORSEC2008 papers. And some other sellected PORSEC2008 papers will also be published in a key national publication of China. All the participants can begin to prepare the papers now and are warmly welcome to visit the homepage of PORSEC2008: http://ledweb.scsio.ac.cn/porsec2008/ , and contact lingzistdl@126.com and porsec2008@scsio.ac.cn.
