  Introduction:

Diversity of marine organisms and their production mechanisms are very important parts of marine biology. They are critical science issues for resources dynamics and development, fishery management and biodiversity protection. Related researches are the present hotspots of many international programs with important scientific significance and applied foreground.

With domestic and international fund supports and requirements of marine resources development and environment protection in China, our group has been studying on international scientific hotspots of marine ecology and marine biology of in representative waters of South China Sea, such as, biodiversity, production process and regulation mechanism. Many innovative productions were achieved and listed as followed, 1) first discovered the maxim-level layer of primary productivity and explained its cause of formation and adjustment mechanism in tropic sea area. 2) established chlorophyll-a vertical distribution model and experience formula for in situ fluorescence monitoring. 3) advanced and validated the concept about “High-effect nutrient pump in coral reef ecosystem”. 4) first studied seaweed species and their distribution along the coast of South China Sea; 5) explained the structure of plankton function population and their production process in estuary, bay and shelf waters, studied on the ecological characteristics and dynamic model of red tide (or harmful algae bloom) along South China Sea. 6) validated the differences of trace metals transfer process along food chain, established their bioavailablity model. 7) discovered the process and adjustment mechanism of larval settlement and metamorphosis of marine invertebrate. 8) exploited the molecular identifying technique for Gorgonian, snapper(Lutjanus), the genetic diversity of Pinctada Martensi. 9) established energy income-and-expense formula of 3 marine cultured fish, filled up the blank of marine fish energy researches in China.

Those research productions greatly contributed to enrich and develop the theory of marine ecology. They were also very useful for marine environment protection, fishery ecological management and marine resources sustainable application.
