Prof. Louis Legendre (France) visited the South China Sea Institute
Invited by Professor DanLing TANG of the South China Sea Institute of Oceanology, Chinese Academy of Sciences (SCSIO CAS), Professor Louis Legendre (France) visited SCSIO in November - December, 2008. During his visiting, Prof. Legendre gave serial lectures on “Marine ecosystems and carbon cycling in the ocean”. The lectures were divided into two parts-“Pelagic food webs and biogeochemical fluxes” and “Roles of microbes”. Prof. Legendre also shared his research experience with the young scientists and graduate students and gave advice on their research work. His dedication to science is very impressive.
Prof. Legendre is currently director of the Laboratoire d'Oceanographie de Villefranche (LOV) of France. His major research interests are biological oceanography and marine biogeochemistry; numerical ecology; philosophy of science. He is a world-renowned scientist and has published many papers and works such as Excellence in Ecology Books, Numerical Ecology (Developments in Environmental Modeling).
Laboratoire d'Oceanographie de Villefranche (LOV) is a leading marine research institute and educational facility in France, as well as in the world. It brings together about 30 scientists from a variety of disciplines in oceanography, including biology, biogeochemistry, geochemistry and physics. Researchers at LOV collaborate on many scientific programs all over the world. Prof. Legendre’s visit played a very important part in the future cooperation between SCSIO and LOV.
