Scientists of thescsio attended the 11th Pacific Science Inter-Congress

Dr. Wang Dongxiao, Dr. Tang Danling, Dr. Xie Qiang and Dr. Li Sha of South China Sea Institute of Oceanology, Chinese Academy of Sciences (SCSIO CAS) participated in the 11th Pacific-Science Inter-Congress organized by the Pacific Science Association, France and French Polynesia from the 2nd to the 6th of March 2009 at the Sheraton Hotel in Tahiti, where more than 800 scientists coming from all over the world shared their knowledge on various aspects such as biodiversity, ocean acidification, climate changes, costal environment, future challenges and sustainable development in the Pacific.

In the session “coastal environment”, Dr. Wang Dongxiao, Dr. Tang Danling, Dr. Xie Qiang and Dr. Li Sha gave speeches titled “Modeling of marine environment in the Pearl River Estuary, South China: Hypoxia events in summer and salt-water intrusion in wither”, “Influences of ocean disasters on coastal environments and marine ecosystems-typhoon monitoring, evaluation, and coastal managements”, “Free and forced Rossby waves in the western South China Sea inferred from Jason-1 satellite altimetry data”, and “The preliminary research of ocean color data services system based on web services” respectively.

In another theme session “Climate changes- ocean acidification”, Dr. Tanggave an oral presentation titled “Coral reef bleaching in the South China Sea observed using satellite data”; and also made a poster presentation entitled “Remote Sensing of Coral reef bleaching in the South China Sea” for the Congress.

The 11th Pacific Science Inter-Congress was a very opportune occasion for scientists to study issues in relation to the Pacific Ocean. SCSIO’s scientists’ being invited to the symposium showed that the institute’s research progress and capability had received worldwide recognition in recent years and potential international cooperation between SCSIO and other similar institution was promoted.
