Prof. Marlon Lewis from Canada visited SCSIO --and took part in the seminar on marine remote sensing instruments

Invited by Dr. Danling Tang of the South China Sea Institute of Oceanology, CAS, Prof. Marlon Lewis and Dr. Cyril Dempsey from Department of Oceanography, Dalhousie University, Canada visited the institute from 20th—23rd May, 2009, and took part in the seminar on marine remote sensing instruments hosted by the institute.

In the seminar, Prof. Lewis made a speech titled ‘Why isn't the ocean black? Nutrient return and optical control on phytoplankton in the clearest ocean waters; some successful cases on ocean monitoring made by Satlantic’, and Dr. Dempsey ‘Sensors and observing platforms for ocean monitoring and analysis’. More than 30 people participated in the seminar, including research scientists Dr.Yang Yuezhong, Yang Dingtian, young scientists Dr.Pan Gang, Zhao Hui, Li Cai, and some other graduate students. After their excellent speeches, there followed the heated communication and discussion on the subjects with respect to underwater optical measurement, ocean color remote sensing, water quality monitoring, observation on red tide, ocean and lakes, etc. The seminar was presided over by Dr.Dangling Tang.

Marlon Lewis is currently Killam Professor of Department of Oceanography, Dalhousie University. He participated in the 9th Pan Ocean Remote Sensing Conference (PORSEC 2008) and presided over the theme session ‘Operational Applications of Ocean Satellite Observation’. Prof. Lewis is also President of Satlantic Inc.in Halifax, Canada, which is an advanced technology company that provides precision sensors and data handling solutions to a wide range of scientists and field technicians from varying disciplines.
