Dr.John Kenneth KEESING(Australia) and Prof. Dongyan Liu visited SCSIO

Invited by Prof. Dongxiao Wang of the South China Sea Institute of Oceanology, Chinese Academy of Sciences (SCSIO CAS), Dr.John Kenneth KEESING(Australia) and Prof. Dongyan Liu visited SCSIO on Jun 5th ,2009. Meantime, they gave us the impressive lectures, titled “ The coastal research in western Australia” and “Explore the Green Tide forming reason of Yellow Sea in 2008”. Firstly, based on high level scientific questions guiding deep scientific research, the report discussed the global environmental variations and remote cause of western coast of Australia. The study combined the physical process of ocean current, geochemical cycle of nutrients, phytoplankton and fishery resources together effectively. The studying results were not only helpful for understanding the environmental variations, response and management, but also helpful for the studying direction and content of our institute. Second, based on vivid pictures and certain studying results, the report showed the fact that there had been serious green tide (Enteromorpha prolifera) in Yellow Sea during May to July of 2008, whose occurrence area reached about 650 square kilometers and affluence area reached 1200 square kilometers. Enteromorpha prolifera, accompanied by laver, aggregated through drifting under ocean current conditions after forming high biomass in laver culturing areas of eastern Jiangsu Province and migrated to northern Yellow Sea finally. In order to compensate the 10 million cost of human power and navigational capacity resources caused by the green tide, our study proposed positive measures for controlling the occurrence and environmental evaluation of it.

Professors Dongxiao Wang, Kedong Yin, Yan Du, Associate Prof. Dingtian Yang, Dr. Wei Zhuang, Dr.Xuhua Cheng, Dr.Zhiyou Jing, Dr.Yongli Gao and so on, more than 20 scientists of South China Sea Institute of Oceanology, Chinese Academy of Sciences (SCSIO CAS) participated in this report. During the oral presentation, they discussed the interested issues with experts and then, deliberated the enhancing cooperation.

Dr John Kenneth KEESING got the doctor degree of science from James Cook University of North Queensland in 1989. At present, he is the director of Marine and Atmospheric Research, CSIRO and specializes in Marine science .

Prof. Dongyan Liu is currently the doctoral supervisor and engages in Marine Algae classification and ecology research. She has successful joined in the “One Hundred Talents” program of Yantai Institute of Coastal Zone Research for Sustainable Development,CAS, and presided many projects, such as National Natural Science Foundation Project, “973” and “863”project. During 2004 to 2008, Prof. Liu worked on the field of estuarine and coastal ecology in Wollongong University(Australia), where she leaded and took part in the “Variety of Estuarine Phytoplankton And Ecology Research”project with the New South Wales Natural Resource Department. In this period, she joined in compiling a book and published the scientfic thesises over 60, including 11 SCI articles.
