The 2010 Western Pacific Geophysics Meeting (WPGM) first setting Union Session for South China Sea: its Dynamics and Potential Hazards

The Western Pacific Geophysics Meeting (WPGM), sponsored by American Geophysical Union (AGU), was successfully held in Taipei on June 22-25, 2010.

The meeting included Union and Plenary sessions with the Union session focusing on the South China Sea: its Dynamics and Potential Hazards. The chairs of Union session included many famous oceanological scientists of the world, such as ASwitzer from Nanyang Technological University, Tony Song from JPL/NASA and Tangdong Qu from IPRC–SOEST, University of Hawaii at Manoa, etc. Dr. Dongxiao Wang from SCSIO was one of the conveners of the Union Session.

Including Professor Yan Du and Associate Researcher Minghui Zhao, about 10 scholars from Key Laboratory of Tropical Marine Environmental Dynamics (LED) and Department of Marine Geology of SCSIO participated in this meeting. During this period, Dr. Minghui Zhao was invited to visit Taiwan Ocean University and gave an oral presentation titled “S-wave velocity structure and Vp/Vs derived from three-component OBS data in the NE South China Sea”.

There were 11 oral presentations and some poster presentations in the Union Session for South China Sea. Dr. Dongxiao Wang and Dr. Yeqiang Shu presented oral presentations titled“Review of the Northern South China Sea Open Cruises 2004-2009”and “4D structure of upwelling and the Pearl River plume in the northern South China Sea in summer 2008 revealed by a data assimilative model” respectively.
