EPANF Play a Part in 16th Asian Games Meteorological Services
Prof. PENG Shiqiu from the South China Sea Institute of Oceanology, Chinese Academy of Sciences was invited to play a part in weather consultation for the 16th Asian Games in Guangzhou from November 8 to 11, 2010.
PENG and his team have developed an Experimental Platform of Air-sea Numerical Forecasts (EPANF). The platform had successfully forecasted the strength, track, and landfalling of the super hurricane ‘Fanapi’ and the corresponding coastal storm surge, and had exactly predicted the track turning point and the landfalling two days ahead of the super typhoon “Megi” which is the strongest one generated in the West Pacific during autumn over the last several decades. And this time, EPANF had provided important reference for the 16th Asian Games meteorological services, and its role had been much recognized by PENG’s colleagues including academician CHEN Lianshou.
