CCS Feasibility Study for Guangdong made significant progress

The GDCCSR (Feasibility Study of Carbon Capture and Storage Readiness in Guangdong Province) Project Annual Meeting was held in Guangzhou on 23th, November. During the meeting, each team has reported its research progress and also discussed with each other about the future research approaches.

The GDCCSR project aims to providing the first comprehensive feasibility study report of Carbon Capture and Storage Readiness in Guangdong. It's sponsored by British Consulate-General Guangzhou and Australian GCCSI, and led by South China Sea Institute of Oceanology (SCSIO of CAS) with participants from Energy Research Institution (ERI of NDRC), Guangzhou Institute of Energy Conversion (GIEC of CAS), Wuhan Instituted of Rock and Soil Mechanics (IRSM of CAS), Linkschina Investment Advisory Limited, Universities of Edinburgh, and University of Cambridge. The duration of the project is 3 years.

The reports in the meeting showed that though it has been 8 months since the launch of this project in 1ST April, 2010, the project research group has obtained significant achievement: The energy demand and the carbon dioxide emission in Guangdong province were analyzed; the geological conditions for carbon dioxide storage in the offshore sedimentary basins were studied; the primary model of carbon control system has been set up; the companies for carbon dioxide capture readiness research have been identified; the China Low-carbon Energy Action Network (CLEAN), which is the first professional network for CCS research in China, has been established; CCS assembly and workshops were organized to which local governments and companies attended. The most significant achievements are: the selection for CCS demo project is of a primary shape, and CCS as a low-carbon technology has been known by more and more people and enterprises in Guangdong.

The support from the Guangdong Provincial Development and Reform Commission and the China National Offshore Oil Cooperation Shenzhen Branch have played important role in the progress of the project
