Cross-Strait Workshop on Typhoons and Crisis Management

  Organized by South China Sea Institute of Oceanology (LED, SCSIO), CAS and co-organized by Guangdong University of Foreign Studies (GDUFS) and Taiwan Ocean University (NTOU), the Cross-Strait Workshop on Typhoons and Crisis Management was successfully held in Guangzhou New Pearl River Hotel from 17th to 18th November 2010. The organizing committee consisted of Drs. Danling Tang from South China Sea Institute of Oceanology(LED, RSMEE), CAS, Guangjun Sui from Guangdong University of Foreign Studies, Ming-an Lee from Taiwan Ocean University, and Wang-kun Chen from Taiwan Jinwen University of Science and Technology (JUST). Dr. Danling Tang was Chairman of the organizing committee.

  This is the first cross-strait workshop on typhoon research and crisis management. About 40 scholars, research scientists and graduate students from institutes and universities such as SCSIO, GDUFS, NTOU, JUST, Jinan University, Zhejiang Ocean University, participated in the workshop. The workshop included topics on typhoon’s biological effects, coastal environment, fishery disasters and crisis management of typhoon disasters. There was a comparison on cross-strait typhoon research and crisis management, and potential cross-strait cooperation was explored during the workshop. 

  Typhoon disasters and marine environment are widely noticed scientific and social issues. In recent years SCSIO has gained considerable recognition for its typhoon research which has become one of the major research areas of the institute. The workshop promoted cross-strait cooperation. 

  The Cross-Strait Workshop on Typhoons and Crisis Management was sponsored by the following projects granted to Dr. Danling Tang: (1) Influences on Phytoplankton and Fishery Resources in the Northern South China Sea of Typhoon Disasters, jointly sponsored by National Natural Science Foundation of China and K.T.Li Foundation for the Development of Science and Technology;(2)Hazard Evaluation on Typhoons and Examination on Their Biological Effect in the South China Coastal Area Based on Satellite Remote Sensing(8351030101000002), Team Research Project, Guangdong Natural Science Foundation, China;(3)Influnces of tropical cyclone and its interannual variability on the marine primary production in the South China Sea.
