Scientist from SCSIO participation on Integrated Ocean Drilling Program Costa Rica Seismogenesis Project (CRISP) Expedition 334
Dr. Junjiang Zhu from South China Sea Institute of Oceanology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, has accepted an invitation from the Integrated Ocean Drilling Program (IODP) U.S. implementing organization (USIO) and IODP-China to sail on the drill ship JOIDES Resolution, for the CRISP Expedition 334 from March 13 to April 13, 2011. Onboard Scientists are mainly from Italy, Japan, USA, Germany, France, United Kingdom, China, Australia, Portugal, Korea, India. IODP is an international research program dedicated to drilling the ocean floor to better understand Earth’s history. The two lead agencies funding IODP are the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF) and Japan’s Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT). The European Consortium for Ocean Research Drilling (ECORD) is a Contributing Member and Associate Members include The People’s Republic of China Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST), the Korea Institute of Geosciences and Mineral Resources (KIGAM), the Australian/New Zealand IODP Consortium (ANZIC), and the Indian Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES) (http://www.iodp.org).
The CRISP science program is designed to understand the processes that control nucleation and seismic rupture of large earthquakes at erosional subduction zones. This expedition focus on constraining on the boundary conditions of lithology, fluid flow, and thermal structure that trigger unstable slip in the seismogenic zone along a drilling transect at several slope sites.
