The 2nd CAGS CCS Summer School was successfully held in Sanya, Hainan, China
The 2nd CAGS CCS summer school: CO2 geological storage and technology was held in Sanya, Hainan province, China, from Aug. 21 – Aug. 25, 2011. The School was organised by the South China Sea Institute of Oceanology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, and jointly hosted by the Department of Social Development, Ministry of Science and Technology, the Administrative Centre for China’s Agenda 21, the Department of Resources, Energy and Tourism, Australia, and Geoscience Australia. The summer school focused on CO2 offshore geological storage and technology. 32 students with a variety of backgrounds were selected from over 80 applicants attended at the school including 8 from Australia.
The training course was divided into seven sessions covering most aspects of CO2 capture and storage (CCS) including: Overview of CO2 geological storage, Offshore Geological Storage and Capacity Assessment, Offshore Site investigation and Engineering, CCS Economics and Readiness; Simulation and storage capacity assessment, Risk/Safety Assessment, and Monitoring and Demonstration Projects. Each session comprised lectures and group discussions/exercises. Speakers from Australia, U.K., New Zealand and China gave 22 talks. Students were encouraged to contribute to robust discussions and exercises. Many of them expressed their views freely at group discussions and exercises, which proceeded in a friendly and lively atmosphere. Feedback received was positive and the students felt that they had benefited greatly from this summer school. Through this summer school, students learned some basic skills on CO2 geological storage and technology. The summer school provided an opportunity and a basis for cooperative studies and exchanging information between Australia and China.
