Dr. Kevin Cheung from Macquarie University visited the State Key Laboratory of Tropical Oceanography

Invited by Prof. Dongxiao Wang, the director of State Key Laboratory of Tropical Oceanography, Dr. Kevin Cheung, the senior lecturer of Macquarie University,Australia visited the State Key Laboratory of Tropical Oceanography,SCSIO and gave us a seminar on 21st. Sep.2011, titled“Roles of Mesoscale Convective Systems in Tropical Cyclone Formations: A Numerical Study of Typhoon Ketsana(2003)”. In the presentation, he mainly focused on the roles of mesoscale convective systems (MCS) in tropical cyclones (TCs) formations. He first presented the main observations about the existence, status and interactions of MCSs before the formation of a TC. He then provided corresponding numerical simulations of a typhoon case. Dr. Cheung also shared his future research direction and further interest on this topic. After the presentation, Dr. Cheung answered many questions from the audiences. Dr. Dongxiao Wang, Dr. Shiqiu Peng, and others also had small discussions with Dr. Cheung afterwards about their current ongoing projects related to this topic.  His suggestions are important to our future study.

Kevin Cheung’s educational background was in physics and then he turned to atmospheric sciences and finished a Ph.D. dissertation on tropical cyclone forecasting at the City University of Hong Kong in 1999. He has worked many years in USA and is employed by Macquarie University now. Based on these fundamental understanding of the atmosphere, his research interests span over several directions: 1)Tropical cyclones;2)Climate variability in the Asian-Australian monsoon;3)Dynamical system approaches to weather and climate modeling;4) Climate change impacts, extreme events and risk analysis.

So far he has published 28 Journal Articles, 38 Conference Papers and written a book chapter.
