SCSIO Reaps NSFC Funds in 2011

The South China Sea Institute of Oceanology, Chinese Academy of Sciences (SCSIO) set a new record for receiving the funds granted by the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) in 2011, the first year of China’s 12th Five-Year Plan (2011-2015).

SCSIO has applied for a total number of 157 NSFC programs. 65 programs were approved with funds up to 36.71 million RMB, holding the lead among its peer institutes.

The 65 programs covered 31 general programs, 26 projects for young scientists fund, 2 projects for distinguished young scholars and international cooperation and exchange, and 1 project respectively for joint funds, major program, special funds, and joint research fund for overseas Chinese, Hongkong and Macao young scholars.

All these demonstrated SCSIO’s good momentum of basic scientific research in recent years as well as its sustainable endeavor in mobilizing scientific research workers.

NSFC funding is one of the major channels for national support of basic research, which plays an irreplaceable role in basic research in China. It may symbolize the academic level and research strengths of a certain research institute or university.
