Brief report on the lecture session 3 of "Investigating the South China Sea Lithospheric Structure, Magmatism, and Geodynamics from Global Perspectives"

After the first and second sessions themed as “Global mid-ocean ridge spreading processes and implications for the South China Sea evolution” and “Conjugate margin structure and evolution in the North Atlantic and other margins” respectively, it came to the third session of lecture series themed “Formation and evolution of the West Pacific marginal sea and island arc”. They are the first three of Lecture series "Investigating the South China Sea Lithospheric Structure, Magmatism, and Geodynamics from Global Perspectives", which was convened by Professor Zhen Sun and Professor Chiyue Huang from CAS Key Laboratory of the Marginal Sea Geology. The third session lasted two days from May. 22 to 23.

Many scientists from different research groups were invited, including Professor Ron Harris from Brigham Young University, Professor Weidong Sun and Professor Zhaofeng Zhang from Guangzhou Institute of Geochemistry,CAS, Professor Chunfeng Li from Tongji University and so on. Vice Director Wenhuan Zhan gave a welcome speech and Professor Chiyue Huang introduced the main scientific targets about the third session and the research interests of Professor Ron Harris. Subduction zone and ophiolite are the main themes of the conference, which provide us a new perspective to understand the character of marginal sea and its tectonic evolution. The southeastern boundary of South China Sea is a subductive margin, where ocean ridge and oceanic crust underthrust to Luzon island arc. Research on the types and the genesis of ophiolite accompanied with subduction processes is an important tool to open the mysterious veil on South China Sea. In addition, Professor Harris left us a deep impression on the forum with his multidisciplinary knowledge and the ability to discover and grasp the key question, and the spirit of keeping on finding the method to solve the question.

As the former two sessions, this session succeed in bringing young students and researchers a vibration of scientific idea again.
