The Workshop on ‘wind-driven circulation in the world ocean’ has a successful conclusion

Advocated by Prof. Ruixin Huang , the famous physical oceanographer from Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI),the two weeks’ workshop on‘ wind-driven circulation in the world ocean’ was successfully concluded on 16th,Nov.2012, hosted by the State Key Laboratory of Tropical Oceanography(LTO), South China Sea Institute of Oceanology(SCSIO), Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) in Guangzhou.

This workshop had attracted over 100 young scholars and graduate students from 12 institutes and universities, such as Institute of Atmospheric Physics, CAS, Institute of Oceanology, CAS , South China Sea Institute Of Oceanology, CAS, the First Institute of Oceanography, SOA, the second Institute of Oceanography, SOA and the Third Institute of Oceanography, SOA, Ocean University of China, Chinese University of Science and Technology,Nanjing University of information engineering, Xiamen University and Sun Yat-Sen University, etc.

As the main speaker of this workshop, Prof. Ruixin Huang gave his lecture in the every morning. And in the afternoon, invited experts gave the leading edge reports on wind-driven circulation, including Prof. Bill Dewar from Florida State Uinversity, Prof. Bo Qiu from Hawaii University, Prof. Jianping Gan from HKUST, Dr. Jinbo Wang from WHOI, Prof. Xiangsan Liang from Nanjing University of information engineering, Prof. Wei Wang from OUC, Prof. Liang Sun from Chinese University of Science and Technology, Prof. Dongxiao Wang, Prof. Qisheng Zhou, Prof. Shuqun Cai from LTO,SCSIO, CAS and so on.

Prof. Ruixin Huang’ lectures were rich in knowledge and varied in the language, and he always paid attention to the illuminating exposition in theory and practice. It aimed to explain the fundamental theory about wind-driven circulation and its relation to climate change, including reduced gravity model, energetics of wind-driven circulation, physics of wind-driven circulation, thermocline with continuous stratification, inertial western boundary current, circulation in the subpolar gyre and recirculation, equatorial thermocline & communication between subtropics/tropics, adjustments of the thermocline and basin-scale circulation. More importantly, Prof. Huang still emphasized on the importance of challenge the existing authorities with independent thinking, persistence and courage.

In the workshop, several young scholars and graduate students gave the presentations to show their recent result in scientific research, including Zhiyou Jing, Zhumin Lu from LTO, Hua Jiang from Chinese Academy of meteorological science, etc. During the courses, students listened carefully and attended the discussion actively. The workshop provided us a platform to learn and discuss. It set up a discussion team of ‘wind-driven circulation and thermohaline circulation’ for further learning, communication and discussion. To promote the development of research in physical oceanograghy, the workshop will be conducted regularly every year and invite more famous experts to join us .
