Jiujuan Wang Received Certificate of Award in the poster contest of PORSEC2010

In the 10th Pan Ocean Remote Sensing Conference (PORSEC2010) which was hosted by Taiwan Ocean University and held in Keelong, Taiwan in October 18-22, 2010, doctoral student Jiujuan Wang of LED, SCSIO, CAS received Certificate of Award and money award in the poster contest in recognition of the exceptional research accomplishment of her paper titled “Winter phytoplankton bloom induced by subsurface upwelling and mixed layer entrainment southwest of Luzon Strait”(Wang JJ, Tang Danling, Yi Sui)

To understand dynamic features of the winter phytoplankton bloom southwest of Luzon Strait, the paper analyzes seven years (2000–2006) of remote sensing data of Chlorophyll a, sea surface temperature, and ocean vector winds, along with in situ observations of dissolved oxygen, nutrients (nitrate, phosphate, and silicate), and physical oceanographic parameters mixed layer depth, Ekman pumping velocity, and entrainment velocity. The results demonstrate that the winter phytoplankton bloom in the southwest of Luzon Strait is primarily induced by both Ekman pumping-driven upwelling (observed at about 50 m under sea surface) and upper mixed layer entrainment.

Jiujuan Wang is currently a doctoral student under the supervision of Prof. Danling Tang. Prof. Tang is in charge of Research Center for Remote Sensing of Marine Environment & Ecology Center (RSMEE). Many foreign experts come to visit RSMEE and give presentations every year. Graduate students were sent abroad to participate in training workshops and academic meetings, which broadened their horizon and benefited their research. Many students of RSMEE have won best poster awards in international meetings.
