It aims at the international forefront of the field of marine biology and to set up an open platform for the research on marine biological resources sustainable utilization and marine biotechnology innovation.
The main research areas of LMB include marine biological resources, dynamics of marine ecosystem, maricultural biotechnology and marine pharmaceutical sciences. In recent years, the LMB has made great achievements in the fields of South China Sea bio-resources and dynamics of planktonic communities, classification of tropical marine economy species, protection strategy on coral reefs and seagrass ecosystems, breeding and aquaculture technologies for Penaeid shrimp, scallop, pearl oyster, marine algae and tropical marine bioactive substances.
In recent 3 years, LMB has undertaken more than 130 important research projects including "National High Tech Projects (863)", "National Basic Science and Development Projects (973)" with total funds over 101,970,000 RMB. In terms to the scientific output, it produced 430 publications including 190 in SCI journals, applied for 83 national patents, 60 of which were authorized, and won 21 prizes awarded by national and provincial government.
LMB has 45 research personnel, including 19 professors and 15 associate professors, out of  which, 6 professors are " One Hundred Talented People". LMB has post-doctoral research station for marine science and offers Ph.D. programs in marine biology and environmental sciences, marine biology, aquaculture and environmental sciences. There are currently 86 graduates and 30 visiting experts in LMB.
